Ricoh Takes the Title from HP

For many years HP has owned the printer market and not had any competition. How many IT professionals go with the notion of " No ones every gotten fired for buying an HP ". I have somthing that might surprise some people but Ricoh has taken the award for printer line of the year away from HP.

Presented once each year, BLI’s “Outstanding Printer Line of the Year” award recognizes the vendor whose product line has proven to be the best. The selection is made by BLI’s highly experienced staff of test technicians and editors after subjecting scores of office printers of all types (from monochrome and color personal printers to large workgroup models) from every major vendor to BLI’s unique battery of laboratory tests. Among the many factors considered by BLI in selecting a “Line of the Year” recipient are the reliability, overall economy, print quality, ease of use, productivity and administrative utilities offered by the models in its line.

In commenting on Ricoh’s line, BLI Senior Printer Analyst Marlene Orr noted, “Ricoh offers printers in every segment of the market, from small workgroup to departmental printers, designed to meet the diverse needs of business users. It has taken top honors for its color printers two years running and, now, after submitting its line of monochrome printers to BLI testing, Ricoh has proven to be the clear choice for this honor, as its products have received more Highly Recommended ratings and ‘Picks’ than any other vendor. In fact, BLI tested eight single-function printers from Ricoh, ranging from small workgroup to departmental offerings, including GelSprinter ink-based products and color and monochrome laser printers and seven earned Highly Recommended ratings, while five garnered Pick awards.”

I currently have 5 on my network and they live up to this award. I had never heard of Ricoh before and was told that the reason is because Ricoh does not run many ad campaigns, instead they invest that money back into the independent dealerships and reserch. The printers on my network installed in a snap.

What is the name of that game show?

Dennis Miller is back on Television and I think it’s a great thing. He is the funniest man I know and always tells you whets on his mind in a very thought provoking funny way. Quotes like "You know there is a problem with the education system when you realize that out of the 3 R's only one begins with an R” make me laugh and think at the same time. Miller will be hosting a new show called Amnesia. The game goes like this: Miller asks you questions from your own life to see how much you know about yourself, and if you do you win, I have no idea, but I'm guessing fabulous prizes and/or money. "It's a comedy first that just happens to be wrapped in a game show package, and that allows me to be who I am," he said.

I'd like to be a contestant on this show. I feel like I could do very go at it. I do have that problem with names though. The commercial I saw was a guy trying to guess what his wife's wedding dress looked like. Who could honestly do that?

"Amnesia" is the second hosting gig Miller has lined up in the past month. He recently inked to host "Sports Unfiltered" for versus.

More Salary Studies

I am a sophomore and thought it was time to start looking for an internship at a local company. I was pleasantly surprised at an article I found on TechCrunch while looking for this summer internship. This article says that last year, salaries of up to $70,000 were common for the best students. This year, Facebook is said to be offering $92,000, and Google has increased some offers to $95,000 to get their share of graduates. Students with a Masters degree in Computer Science are being offered as much as $130,000 for associate product manager jobs at Google. This is great for all of us that are in this profession. I do not understand why everyone thinks that all the jobs are going overseas. While there are many jobs that overseas, jobs in this profession a there for to be filled. It is more competitive and competition only makes you better or should make you better. The salary does vary greatly due to company, location, industry, experience and benefits. It just goes back to what my father always said to me "Find something you have passion for and make a career in that and you shall be successful". What do you think about the computer industry job outlook? I like to hear from the seasoned veterans out there.

Gamers All Grown Up

Have you ever been told that video games are for kids? I have many times and so I did a little research and look what I found out. I did a search on who plays video games and was directed to the ESA. A few facts are Sixty-nine percent of American heads of households play computer and video games. Ninety-three percent of people who make the actual purchase of computer games and 83% of people who make the actual purchase of video games are 18 years of age or older. The average age of the game buyer is 40 years old. Adult gamers have been playing an average of 12 years. Among most frequent gamers, adult males average 10 years for game playing, females for 8 years. Fifty-three percent of game players expect to be playing as much or more ten years from now than they do today. The computer gamers are thirty percent of most frequent game players are under eighteen years old. Twenty-six percent of most frequent game players are between 18 and 35 years old. Forty-four percent of most frequent game players are over 35 years old. The console gamers are forty percent of most frequent game players are under eighteen years old. Thirty-five percent of most frequent game players are between 18 and 35 years old. Twenty-five percent of most frequent game players are over 35 years old. So next time someone tells you that video games are for kids give them some these facts. Also tell them there is big money involved with video games. Gaming is now major league.

UltraPortable Air

The MacBook Air is the thinnest laptop on the market. I have been looking for a more portable laptop for several months and the Air grabbed my consideration. Did pulling this laptop out of a manila folder get your attention like it did mine? There are a few things I do not like though is the limited ports, no ExpressCard or card-reader option and the battery is not user upgradable. These are things I believe will be easy to work around and that is why I went ahead and pre-ordered the Air . The price was right for my budget and since I carry my computer everywhere this will take the load off my shoulder. Once I receive the Air i will report on the functionality of it and how much of a load it took off. Who else has order a Macbook Air and what do you think?
